Tips And Tricks On House Training A Dog

House training a dog is one of the first things new dog owners think about. This is because they can only stand so much urine on the floor and at some stage they become really annoyed with the behavior of their four legged friend.

It is crucial to begin housebreaking as soon as possible, preferably before your puppy reaches 3 months. Why? Because the older he gets the more resistant he will be to learning new habits. Of course, older dogs can be potty trained equally well, but it may take a bit more time. The techniques used and general approach are the same but you need to show a lot of patience and persistency while housebreaking an older pet.

Before I can share with you more information on house training a dog I need to mention few more things that will form a basis for your future potty training attempts.

House Training A Dog – Prepare For The Challenge

House Training A Dog 2025865In order for your four legged friend to learn that eliminating indoors is not the best idea, he has to eliminate inside your apartment a few times first. This will happen so don’t freak out. Instead, prepare plenty of cleaning liquids and some odor liquidating sprays. The latter ones will be particularly useful because canines prefer to soil spots that they already know and used in the past and can develop a habit of returning there on a regular basis (by following the smell of their urine or poop). I bet you don’t want your new dog to leave a mess on your favorite sofa on a consistent basis.

Resist From Punishing Your Four Legged Friend

Make sure not to punish your dog if you catch him red handed. It is crucial that you don’t scream or hit your pet for doing the wrong things. It has been proven countless times already that negative reinforcement training is less effective than positive reinforcement. So the next time you catch your pet in the middle of making a mess on the carpet try to stop that impulsive reaction, and instead say firmly ‘outside’ and take him to the garden.

What Is Submissive Urination

A lot of new dog owners mistake their dog’s problems with bladder with submissive urination. It is important to make a clear distinction between these two things as it may save you a lot of time and effort on using the wrong treatment methods. Submissive urination is a situation in which your dog is urinating in order to show his subordination. In general, this is a good sign as it means that your pet accepts you as a pack leader and won’t try to dominate you in any way. However, the fact that he shows it by messing the floor is somewhat problematic and appropriate steps need to be taken to eliminate this problem.

First of all, you will have to reduce your dog’s stress levels to minimum. That is why you should not scream or hit him and, in extreme cases, avoid bending over him in a dominant position (like when you’re trying to explain him that he did something wrong). Additionally, you should resist from showing him too much love as your pet may get overexcited and express his happiness by urination. Instead, for the following few weeks try to keep the emotions at low levels and don’t pay too much attention to your dog. That way he will not feel obliged to show you his subordination and the problem will disappear.
